Russ Hennings, Senior Staff Photographer for Oakley, describes his job as the, "best job in the world." He speaks about his journey from intern to photographer in the following interview.
When did you realize your interest in photography?
I began my interest in photography while in high school. One of my teachers offered an independent study class in photography, since the visual art courses were limited. I was fortunate to have one-on-one training. I was able to practice my craft by working on the school newspaper and the yearbook.
Why did photography appeal to you?
Photography is about conveying a message from deep within. I am passionate about creating and producing quality images every time I shoot.
What experiences helped you begin your career?
I interned at Surfing Magazine, where Larry "Flame" Moore, the photo editor, became an important mentor. The first day that I met him, I asked what tools I needed to be a good photographer. He told me that I needed a good camera with water housing. Flame told me to bring a check and he would give me a water-housing for a camera that he had just ordered. The set-up cost around $3,000. Flame knew I was serious, when I came up with the check the very next morning. His mentorship was invaluable to me.
How did the experience help you?
I would meet Flame at the beach before sunrise every morning. My task was to swim out with the surfers and take pictures. Flame would then critique my work. He was very strict, and sometimes he "chewed me out." However, I appreciated all that he taught me. I learned a lot about photography, but also about listening and working as a team member. It was his recommendation to the surf team manager at Oakley that helped me get my job at Oakley.
What are some benefits of becoming a photographer?
My interests include sports and travel ... I am able to combine both interests within my career. I travel 60% of the year. Recently, I photographed surfers in Australia, and then traveled to the U.S. to shoot Major League Baseball, during spring training. This week, I am shooting some of our PGA tour golfers and then flying to Argentina to shoot our Ski and Snowboard catalog. Oakley covers a large variety of sports.
What advice would you give students to further their photography career?
I would say to follow your dreams! Do what you want to do in life and everything will fall into place. Apply yourself 100% and let the pitfalls teach you along the way.
